The Simpsons were renewed by Fox in its 33rd and 34th seasons. The long animated comedy will now run until 2023.
The series premiered in 1990 and is the program with the oldest primetime script in TV history. The next two seasons will bring the total number of episodes to 757. Season 32 debuted in September last year and will continue until May this year.
In a statement, Simpsons creator Matt Groening said, “Everyone at the Simpsons is excited about the renovation once again and we are planning a lot of big surprises. Homer will lose a hair, Milhouse will receive contact lenses and Bart will celebrate his tenth birthday by thirty-third time. “
The show underwent a minor cast change last year, with white actors no longer giving voice to black characters on the show. The latest cast change is Kevin Michael Richardson taking over the role of Dr. Julius Hibbert from Harry Shearer. Richardson will make his debut as Richardson on Sunday, February 28, 2021. Hank Azaria has already left the voice of the Indian character Apu, although Fox has not yet announced a new cast for the role. Another character voiced by Azaria, Carl, is now voiced by Alex Désert.
Groening himself spoke on the subject recently, admitting that: “Actually, I had no problems with the way we were doing this. All of our actors play dozens of characters each, it was never designed to exclude anyone.” However, he declared “we are trying to make it better. Intolerance and racism are still an incredible problem and it is good to finally seek more equality and representation”
