The second strong earthquake today hits the Loyalty Islands; no tsunami threat to Hawaii

A second earthquake occurred this morning near the Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia.

A preliminary magnitude 6.4 earthquake was recorded at 11:24 am Hawaii time, 258 miles east of Vao, Southern Province, New Caledonia, at a depth of 6.2 miles, according to the US Geological Survey.

As with the previous earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a tsunami in Hawaii and no destructive tsunami in the entire Pacific was expected.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE

A major earthquake occurred in the southwestern Pacific Ocean near the Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia earlier this morning, but it does not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The magnitude 7.7 earthquake was recorded at 3:20 am Hawaii time, 257 miles east of Vao, Southern Province, New Caledonia, at a depth of 6.2 miles, according to the US Geological Survey.

“There is no tsunami threat in Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin, and a destructive tsunami across the Pacific was not expected.

No serious injuries were reported immediately.
