NEW YORK (AP) – A large snowstorm hit the northeastern United States on Sunday, less than a week after a storm hit more than 2 feet in parts of the region.
In the early evening, the total snow reached 20 to 28 centimeters from the New York metropolitan area to eastern Massachusetts. The National Weather Service reported that 11 inches fell in Walpole, Massachusetts. Some areas on Long Island were 20 centimeters, and Westwood, in northern New Jersey, was 23 centimeters. Large, fluffy flakes began to fall in Rhode Island late Sunday morning, prompting local governments to ban street parking and warn of poor travel conditions for the rest of the day. A heavy strip of snow towards the northeast had poured 5 inches into the cities of Sharon and Uxbridge, south-east of Boston, around 2 pm.
In Connecticut, a tractor trailer with a rotating knife caused two exits to close on Interstate 84 in Middlebury, with only one lane of traffic passing.
Meteorologist Bob Oravec said a mixture of snow and rain would move north on the east coast. “It’s a storm that moves quickly,” said Oravec.
