The SC tax term changes to align with the IRS

The South Carolina Department of Revenue will follow the change in the deadline announced on Wednesday by the IRS for individual income tax and will change the normal period from April 15 to May 17.

The change means that individuals now have until May 17 to register and pay their individual income tax for fiscal year 2020, although those who pay estimated taxes must still make those payments by April 15.

The extension is automatic, so taxpayers do not need to fill out additional forms or call DOR to qualify.

DOR encourages taxpayers to use the electronic filing options available at dor.sc.gov/iit-filing and to request direct deposit.

The deadline was also extended last year with the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
