The Screen Actors Guild Awards does not receive as much fanfare from the general public as the Oscars, but it is still a great night for the film industry, often setting a tonal precedent for Oscars. On March 14, they plan to roll out the proverbial red carpet and offer trophies for some of the most resonant performances of last horrible year. But they won’t be the only oness throwing a pandemic-appropriate party that night: With the Recording Academy recently rpostponing the Grammy for the same night, now we have a classic trope “popular kids are having a party the same night as MY party” in our hands, and SAG is not very happy with this plot twist.

Deadline reports that SAG-AFTRA – which announced its plan to move its event from January to March last July – is deeply disappointed by the Recording Academy’s decision to share the date, expressed in a statement to the Deadline: “We are extremely disappointed to learn of the conflicting date, March 14, announced today for this year’s Grammy Awards broadcast. We announced the same date for the SAG Awards last July, with the intention of giving the greatest possible consideration of programming for other award shows. We expect the same consideration from sister organizations across the industry. ”

If you are thinking that SAG-AFTRA is banking a little too heavily in kindness of real strangers, consider that it is optimism probably stems from an almost identical situation that occurred last year. The difference is, WWhen the Guild learned that the Grammy had announced its broadcast for the same night – January 26, 2020 – SAG advanced your event in a week out of courtesy. It is ask a lot for a little reciprocal courtesy? Probably not, but this is the same Recording Academy that suggested Justin Bieber deserves positive reinforcement for “Gostoso” and paid The Weeknd nothing but dust. They don’t know anything about decency.

The Grammies did not respond to SAG-AFTRA and we do not imagine that they will, choosing to just continue with this kind of postponement of Plan C. But if the SAG Awards are looking for ideas here, there are many examples of the Party Scheduling Gambit trope on TV and at the cinema to enjoy it. I hope soon figure out how to launch a socially distant rager that will compete.
