Friday, January 8, marks a year since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s bombastic announcement that they were stepping down as senior royalty – and therefore about a year since the tabloids started using the phrase “Megxit”, which, it seems, is a little inaccurate and an unfair way of describing the movement. While some corners of the media rushed to place the blame on Meghan, a source close to Harry revealed that the Sussex real departure was actually his idea.
“It got to the point where he wanted a different lifestyle,” explained a source to the Vanity Fair. “Meghan was simply the catalyst.” It’s probably time to retire “Megxit” forever, don’t you agree?
Vanity Fair also revealed that the Sussex shock announcement was not how Meghan and Harry wanted things to be. Royal historian Robert Lacey told the magazine: “Harry and Meghan thought hard about trying to create something that would work for both sides, but everything was ruined when their plans were leaked to the press.”
“Harry was trying to get Charles, William and the queen to approve a plan, which they wanted in writing. Harry wanted to talk face to face because he was worried it would leak,” continued Lacey. “Reluctantly, he put it in writing, it leaked, and it prompted the Sussex to make the announcement.”
A year later, Meghan and Harry are reportedly stronger than ever, despite a painful 2020 in which Meghan suffered a miscarriage and both filed legal action for invasion of the press and inaccurate stories. Finding Freedom author Omid Scobie said Vanity Fair, “They have proven that they can win the challenge when it comes their way.”
“When you look at everything they faced, nothing went as planned, but they remained positive,” continued Scobie, “and it is the support they give each other that helps them overcome.”
