Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are planning some serious talks with the older members of the royal family. The Sussex are preparing to enter into discussions to extend their royal exit agreement with Buckingham Palace, which is due to expire on March 31, 2021.
The couple are due to make a series of “friendly video calls” to senior royalty in January, before Harry flies to the UK (if COVID restrictions permit) early next year for face-to-face talks on the subject, according to a new The sun. Sources told the agency that the negotiations would be “less conflicting” than those that took place at the family summit in Sandringham in January 2020.
Harry and Meghan’s main priorities in the negotiations are to keep their sponsorships real. It was widely reported that Harry was devastated to lose his military titles as part of the couple’s initial royal exit deal. The military papers that Harry used to keep have been vacant since the royal departure and are expected to remain vacant until at least next summer, however, leaving open the possibility that he could negotiate to get at least some of his military titles back.
“Harry regrets losing these titles and keeping them open for as long as possible keeps that olive branch out,” said an aide to the situation. “Don’t be surprised if they are not filled out even after March 31st.”
According to royal biographer Andrew Morton, the Sussex relationship with the rest of the royal family is recovering and they would like to return as a family to some major landmarks in 2021 if travel restrictions are lifted and it is safe to do so. Some of the next real events that Harry and Meghan (and their son, Archie Harrison) would like to attend include the Queen’s 95th birthday on April 21, Prince Philip’s 100th birthday on June 10 and the inauguration of a statue of the Princess Diana on July 1, on what would be her 60th birthday.
“Although they are part of this for Zoom, Harry wants to meet face to face to solve everything,” explained Morton. “Things seem to have calmed down. Harry has been in contact with the Queen more often than you think. But certain things you need to be there personally to resolve. They will need a few weeks. Even though things have improved between Harry, Meghan and the rest of the royal family, however, royal sources say that the details of the extent of the actual exit will still be difficult to discover.
