The Rollable phone from LG is real and will be launched in 2021

LG launched its Rollable phone yesterday at the Consumer Electronics Show, and now the company is confirming that it is a real product that will be available in 2021. The LG Rollable has what the company calls an “exclusive scalable screen” that extends from a phone to a small tablet screen. The screen slides in and out of place to provide a larger screen area.

“Our management wanted to show that this is a real product as there were a lot of rumors around the roll-up phone,” said an LG spokesman in a statement to the Nikkei. “As it is launched at CES 2021, I can say that it will be launched this year.”

Nikkei also reports that LG is working with China’s BOE Technology Group on scrollable screen technology. LG has yet to confirm which screen technology Rollable is using, or any details about the different screen sizes.

LG started working on Rollable as part of the company’s “Project Explorer” experiments. The company took advantage of this project to previously launch its LG Wing smartphone, with a rotating design and two OLED screens.

Now that LG has created its new LG Rollable phone and has confirmed that it is coming to market this year, we are likely to see a race between phone manufacturers to launch this rollable screen technology. TCL also demonstrated future phone concepts in March, and Oppo launched a concept device with an expandable OLED display at the end of last year.
