The latest wave of gaming phone launches has begun. Last week, Nubia announced the absolutely ridiculous Red Magic 6, and now Asus has arrived with a slightly different version – a that is a a little more sophisticated and still with huge specifications.

The first thing you’ll notice on the ROG Phone 5 (Asus jumped 4 to avoid bad luck) is an updated design. Asus ditouched The attention-seeking active ventilation channel the company used in the previous model for a more elegant version, although still inspired by cyberpunk, back, which this time is available in black and white. And while Asus has increased the amount of RGB lighting, using a perforated grid to hide the LEDs results in a slightly more adult appearance.

Inside, the ROG Phone 5 features specifications similar to those of the previous model, including a 2448 x 1080 6.78 inch AMOLED screen with a refresh rate of 144 Hz (only slightly less than the 165 Hz screen used in Red Magic 6), along with a Snapdragon 888 chip, 8 GB of RAM , 128 GB of storage, one huge 6,000 mAh battery and triple rear cameras (64 MP main, 13 MP ultra-wide and 5 MP macro). But this is just the basic model.

There’s also a Pro model that comes with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, but the really eye-catching model is the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate, which comes with an impressive 18 GB of RAM and, most importantly, it has a rear panel with a integrated black and white screen that can be programmed to display what you want.

The colored SIM trays have also been customized to read “GLHF”, which is a nice touch.

I really appreciate all the little adjustments that Asus made to this generation’s ROG Phone 5, including an 800 nit display that is 200 nits brighter than before, even better front stereo speakers (which is impressive considering the ROG Phone 3 already had some of the best audio on a smartphone) and 300 Hz touch sampling to reduce input latency during games. Hell, Asus went so far as to include a new DAC and brought back the 3.5 mm headset on the ROG Phone 5, after abandoning the door on previous ROG devices.

And to really improve your credibility in mobile games, Asus worked with Sentons to improve the fifth generation AirTriggers on the ROG Phone 5, which includes nine tiny piezoelectric sensors in bothsensitive triggers to provide the most responsive inboard controls yet.

Finally, to help support better mobility and faster charging, Asus has divided the 6,000 mAh battery of the ROG Phone 5 into two separate sections, allowing for better heat management and charging of up to 65 watts.

The only real annoyance now is that there is no official details of when the ROG Phone 5 will be available in the U.S., which means that we have to rely on European prices for now. The standard ROG 5 is expected to go on sale in March starting at 799 euros (about $ 950), with the Pro model arriving in April for 1,199 euros (about $ 1,430), and the Ultimate Edition is scheduled to arrive in May for 1,299 euros (about $ 1,550).
