The rare Pokémon Blastoise card sells for $ 360,000, while a TCG box of the first edition costs $ 408,000

We witnessed some amazing sales in the last few months with Pokémon cards. In October, retired rapper Logic spent $ 226,000 on a first edition of the Charizard card and a student sold his Trading Card Game collection for $ 80,000 to pay for the university. Not to be outdone, now we’ve seen a rare Blastoise card costing $ 360,000 to make your eyes water.

By setting the highest value that a single card was sold at auction, you can see why by understanding the story behind it. Created by Wizards of the Coast, which originally published the Pokémon TCG, this was one of two presentation cards used to convince Nintendo about going ahead with a collectible card game. As a result, it commands a significantly higher value than your standard Blastoise card.

At the same time, a separate auction was taking place for a set of TCG cards from the first edition and managed to sell for an incredible $ 408k. There is no similar story with this rare reinforcement set, however, it was only sought after and closed.

On the bright side, those of us without a hundred thousand dollars to spare should remember that The Pokémon Company is relaunching some iconic cards as part of the series’ 25th anniversary celebrations. Including designs from the original base set, they will be oversized, but thankfully not too expensive.
