The viral photo of Senator Bernie Sanders sitting with his gloves crossed in Biden’s possession made almost no history, revealed the photographer who captured the image.
“My lens was originally on someone else, but from the other eye I saw him playing with his hands and I quickly went back to him. I originally thought I lost, ”Getty Images photographer Brendan Smialowski told Esquire about the now famous photo.
Smialowski, who photographed at least four presidential inaugurations, said he knew the image would be Bernie’s quintessence.
“I took the picture for a reason; it’s a good slice of life. It depends on who that man is, ”he said.
“I think the reason for the success has very little to do with my real image, but more to do with Bernie Sanders and his followers and his well-defined image that can convey something like that.”
The photo – which shows Sanders looking less than amused, hunched over and sitting alone in a folded chair on the opening stage – spawned countless memes in several languages and exhausted the Vermont glove company that makes the pair Sanders wore.
“Thanks for all the interest in Bernie’s gloves! It really was an incredible and historic day! I’m so flattered that Bernie used them at the opening. Unfortunately, I no longer have gloves on sale. There are many great artisans at ETSY who make them ”, knitter Jen Ellis tweeted Wednesday.
