The ‘No Man’s Sky’ update allows players to adopt aliens as pets

The last big update is shaking the exploration simulator once again, allowing you to befriend and adopt wild alien creatures. Since flora and fauna are generated in a procedural way, you may have some extremely unusual pets.

When you feed a creature, an interaction menu will appear with options for milking, assembling or adopting it. You can have up to six companions at the start, although you can unlock new slots. Companions have their own personalities and you can personalize them with a new name, accessories and decals.

You will need to gain the trust of the creatures over time. Sometimes they need food and your attention, but they can do much more than just provide you with company. They can help you as you explore looking for resources and buildings, digging up items, hunting and signaling hazards to your attention. Companions can even use items like a torch and mining lasers. You can summon them or direct them with gestures. If you’re playing in virtual reality, you can point to a location to send your alien friend over there.

Riding an alien creature in the No Man's Sky Companions update

Hello Games

Creatures can communicate with your exosuit through a neural link from your harness to give you an idea of your thoughts, desires and needs. You will also have the option to ride giant creatures.

If you take good care of your companions, they will lay eggs. They can hatch to give you a new baby creature and you can exchange eggs with other players. You can even control its interior to produce unique creatures, changing the genetic material of the eggs in an Egg Sequencer in a Space Anomaly.

The update fixes some bugs and improves loading and warp times on PlayStation 4. There is also a welcome update to the user interface. You can use analog sticks (or shortcut keys if you play with a mouse and keyboard) to quickly select options in dialog and interaction menus.

However, this patch is mainly about creatures, including improvements to motion animations and “particle effects emanating from the creature’s dung”. Is now available on all platforms.
