The next iPad Pro may have a Thunderbolt port

Apple plans to launch a new model of the iPad Pro soon – perhaps as early as next month – according to sources quoted by Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who accurately predicted several Apple product launches in recent years.

The report states that the new iPad Pros will come in the same 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes that are currently offered and that they will be similar to current models as well. However, they will have better cameras, faster processors, a new port and – at least on the 12.9-inch model – new screen technology.

The biggest surprise in this article is that the new port would be the same as that found on Apple laptops: Thunderbolt. Bloomberg sources say Apple has been testing versions of the iPad Pro that can connect to more external displays and other types of peripherals because of the inclusion of a Thunderbolt port.

They do not, however, make any sense as to whether the support of the external monitor will be improved from the basic mirroring implementation that we see on the iPad now.

The new iPad Pros will have a new, faster chip that is more comparable in performance to the M1 found on the MacBook Air and the 13-inch MacBook Pro launched last year. And at least the larger of the two iPad Pro models would have a new Mini LED screen, adhering to a trend in this direction among many electronics manufacturers looking to make LCD screens cheaper and more resistant to OLED.

The report does not elaborate on the upcoming camera changes, saying only that they will be better than the cameras on current models.

Bloomberg concludes with a reminder that his sources have already said that Apple plans “major updates” for the iMac and MacBook Pro, as well as AirTags, the company’s competitor Tile with augmented reality features.

Apple was widely publicized to host an event announcing new iPads and perhaps other products next week, but the window in which invitations would normally be sent to such an event has passed, suggesting that this will not happen after all.

Apple announced an update to the iPad Pro around that time last year, however, Bloomberg’s claim that a new update will come as soon as April looks plausible.
