The next generation of Galaxy watches coming sooner than expected

It’s only been six months since Samsung launched the Galaxy Watch 3, but we’ve heard rumors about its successor. It was revealed last month that the next generation Galaxy Watch models could offer support for reading the blood glucose level. Now more details about Samsung’s upcoming smartwatches have been released.

According to reliable leak IceUniverse (@UniverseIce), Samsung will launch two Galaxy Watch 4 series smartwatches: Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 4. The South Korean company seems to be skipping the Galaxy Watch Active 3 model name this year to align the numbering of the Galaxy Watch Active series with the Galaxy Watch series. Both smartwatches could be launched sometime in the second quarter of 2021. This is before Samsung’s normal third quarter launch date for its smartwatches.

Next generation Galaxy watches are expected to come in two sizes (with model numbers SM-R86x and SM-R87x) and in Bluetooth and LTE variants. Galaxy Watch Active 2 brought support for ECG and fall detection, and Galaxy Watch 3 introduced SpO2 reading. There are rumors that the latest generation Galaxy watches bring non-intrusive readings of the blood glucose level, which means that there is no need to pierce the user’s fingertip. The only feature that seems to be lacking is the monitoring of skin temperature.

There are also rumors that at least one of Samsung’s next smartwatches would switch from the Tizen platform to Google’s Wear OS platform. It is not yet clear whether Samsung has decided to completely abandon its own Tizen platform in favor of Google’s wearable platform or whether it is just testing waters now. However, this would still give Wear OS a much needed boost in terms of sales and popularity.
