The next day – Engadget

Your daily newsletter is back and Apple’s expensive smart speaker is leaving. Late Friday TechCrunch was the first to report that Apple is discontinuing the original HomePod, news that came after people realized it was out of stock on the company’s website.

In a statement, Apple said it would focus on the $ 99 mini HomePod, which is sad news for all fans of expensive technology company speakers. HomePod joining Google Home Max in the scrap is good news for experts like Sonos, but for me it’s just another example of why people are skeptical about investing in these niche devices made by technology companies.

Smart speakers from Sonos, Apple and Google

Last year, Sonos’ ‘recycling mode’ effort tried to alienate users of devices that were up to a decade old, and the owners still revolted.
