The next Apple iPhone may have an always-on screen

Rumors for the iPhone 2021 line are rapidly gaining momentum. According AppleInsider, known Max Weinbach pourer and EverythingApplePro shared a flood of next-generation iPhone leaks, including news of an always-on screen. Reportedly, the battery-efficient 120 Hz LTPO (low temperature polycrystalline oxide) screen will mimic your lock screen and provide a handful of information without any input, much like what you see on some Android devices. Only the battery and the clock would be visible consistently, but a “bar and icons” would show your notifications. New notifications would appear, but only momentarily.

Weinbach also echoed rumors from up-to-date camera analysts across the board, including enhanced ultra-wide cameras (with better performance in low light), automatic astrophotography and a portrait video mode similar to the Galaxy S21. You can also see stronger MagSafe magnets. The wallet add-on should not slip when you pull your iPhone out of your pocket. This will not necessarily lead to the legendary iPhone without a door, but it is certainly a better case for that.

The design may not change much this year, Weinbach said, in addition to a more attractive matte on Pro models. Several earlier rumors said the iPhone used a smaller and less intrusive notch for the facial ID and the front camera, along with a possible reader fingerprint on the display.

We would accept these rumors with the proverbial grain of salt. No matter how accurate Weinbach is, Apple could easily cut or modify features before production begins. The company reportedly removed the 120 Hz monitors from the iPhone 12 family due to concerns about battery life, for example. An always available display would make sense, given the advances in technology, however. LTPO is the key to making displays always active viable in recent Apple Watches, and they have been around for some time on devices like the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Apple can update the always-on features without having to sacrifice much (if any) longevity.
