The New York Public Library will keep Dr. Seuss’s books on their shelves: Here’s why

The New York Public Library (NYPL) will continue to lend six specific titles from Dr. Seuss, even though the company that preserves and protects the author’s legacy has decided to stop publishing those titles.

Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced on Tuesday, on the National Read Across America Day, the publication of titles such as “And think I saw on Mulberry Street”, “If I Ran the Zoo”, “McElligot’s Pool”, “On Beyond Zebra !, “” Super Scrambled Eggs! “And” The Cat’s Quizzer “will cease after the controversy that these specific books include racist images.

The decision came after discussions last year, with the company citing concerns that the books – published in the 1940s and 50s – “portray people in ways that are harmful and wrong.”

The NYPL will not remove these books from its shelves, it said this week, citing its duty to “ensure accurate and diverse collections”.

“As public libraries do not censor the material, the very few copies we have of Dr. Seuss’ 6 titles in question will remain in circulation until they are no longer in acceptable condition,” a NYPL spokesman told Fox News. “At this point, we will not be able to replace them, as the books are out of print.”

“In the meantime, librarians, who are deeply concerned with serving their communities and ensuring accurate and diverse representation in our collections – especially children’s books – will certainly consider this information strongly when planning history times, exhibitions and recommendations,” added the porta -voice.

The spokesman also specified that the books in question comprise only 30 copies in total across the library system, indicating a low demand for these books. For one of the books, the library has zero copies in circulation, he said.

The copies of the books will remain in the library’s research collection, ensuring that students and researchers have access to the books on the spot, after the copies of the books have been released from the shelves.

CHRIS HARRISON SAID THAT PLANS TO HOST THE ‘BACHELOR’ FRANCHISE AGAIN IN THE FIRST INTERVIEW SINCE IT PASSES TO THE SIDE

The decision to cease publication provoked a strong reaction from readers and commentators.

One of Dr. Seuss’s stepdaughters told The New York Post that the famous author did not have “a racist bone” in his body, and she hopes that the books will be reprinted because Seuss’s work is “unique”.

Late night presenter Jimmy Kimmel joked that the assignment to cancel cultural pressure could pave the way for former President Trump to return to office in 2024.

“That’s how Trump is re-elected, by the way,” Kimmel told the audience. “Cancel Dr. Seuss, cancel Abe Lincoln, melt Mr. Potato Head’s private parts and throw them at the Muppets. That’s your way to victory next time.”
