The double bus is now hanging down the road, said the NYPD.
The accident happened near midnight on Thursday at Cross Bronx Expressway and University Avenue, according to the NYPD. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, police said.
“The bus fell about 15 meters on the access road,” said FDNY deputy chief Paul Hopper on the New York Fire Department’s Instagram account.
It is not yet clear whether the accident was caused by operator error or mechanical malfunction and no arrests have been made so far, the police added.
Streets near the crash site are now closed and authorities say traffic in the area is delayed. Heavy trucks are on site preparing to remove the hanging bus, police said.
“We are currently ensuring that all fuel and other hazardous materials inside the vehicle are protected until the bus can be put on the road,” said FDNY acting battalion chief Steven Moore on Instagram.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
