The Nintendo Switch may be one of the most popular video game consoles at the moment, but it’s starting to look a little time consuming. In addition to the release of the 2019 Lite edition, the Switch remained unchanged inside and out for nearly four years. But new leaks suggest that the so-called ‘Switch Pro’ is finally on the horizon.
According to the leaks, the new console will mark a significant improvement on the original Switch, in terms of performance. It is set to be the first model to support 4K resolution, along with Nvidia’s DLSS technology (which is capable of increasing image quality without loss of frame rate). The respected Nintendo leaker, Nate Drake, went to the ResetEra forum (seen by Wccftech) to claim that the new Nintendo Switch will be “like a PS4 with DLSS and a more capable CPU”. While we can’t expect the tiny Switch to compete with Sony’s huge PlayStation 5 (here’s where to buy a PS5), a 4K portable device as powerful as the PS4 looks incredible.
While the Switch currently supports 1080p output while docked (or 720p in portable mode), 4K video would be a new frontier for Nintendo. Exploring Hyrule from Breath of the Wild or zooming through Bowser’s castle in Mario Kart will be more immersive experiences than ever in crisp 4K.
And it’s not just the interns who are inside what Drake calls a “significant upgrade” – the console’s portable mode has been configured to be enhanced, probably getting a bigger screen with a higher resolution. And we can enjoy it sooner or later – they say the updated device will be released in 2021.
But perhaps the most interesting revelation is that the Nintendo Switch Pro may not even be called the Nintendo Switch Pro – they say the new device is called the Super Nintendo Switch. This is, of course, a charming nod to the 1990’s Super Nintendo Entertainment system, one of the most beloved retro consoles of all time.
As for the appearance of the Super Nintendo Switch, we will have to wait and see. But if it’s something like this incredible ‘Switch Pro’ concept, fans will undoubtedly be satisfied. Demonstrating the appearance of a larger screen, the design (above) features a huge 4K screen and much more ergonomic-looking Joy Cons.
While the so-called Super Nintendo Switch looks very impressive, it may not arrive anytime soon – with Microsoft and Sony launching their own extremely popular next-generation consoles in 2020, Nintendo will need to do everything possible to stay on the game market. That said, the current switch shows no signs of slowing down in terms of popularity.
