Dyson has a new flagship cordless handheld vacuum that joins its ranks and illuminates dirt and dust on its floors. The Dyson V15 Detect uses a laser dust detection system to illuminate each particle, even if you can’t see it with the naked eye.
The dust detection technology is housed in an updated Fluffy cleaning head (the soft roller brush designed for hard floors and comes with several Dyson toothpicks) called Slim Fluffy.
It uses laser diodes, mounted at an angle of 1.5º and 7.2 mm above the ground, to launch a short, eye-safe beam of green light in front of the cleaning head. These specifications, according to Dyson, offer “the best contrast between dust and flooring”, with light highlighting dirt and debris stains.
While other vacuum cleaners use lights to show you Where you’re aspiring for, the Dyson V15 Detect is designed to show what you are cleaning.

The average size of dust, plant spores and fungi is about 10 microns and, says Dyson, the V15 Detect will, well, detect such small particles.
The V15 Detect is also equipped with an acoustic piezoelectric sensor to detect sounds and vibrations of particles. Next to a new microprocessor, this sensor allows the device to monitor the size and amount of dust it is sucking. This is then displayed graphically on the V15’s built-in LCD monitor at the rear of the main handheld, giving you a clear picture of the condition your floors are in.
The V15 Detect also comes with a small tapered brush designed specifically to clean hair and hair from upholstered surfaces (such as car seats and furniture). The shape of the cleaning tool causes the wires to move towards the thinnest end without getting caught in the brush, from where they are sucked into the basket.
According to Dyson engineers, this anti-entanglement process works only on smaller sized tools, so an additional carpet cleaning head is not an option. In theory, the small tool can be used on carpets, but it will take longer due to its smaller size.
These innovations mean that the V15 Detect is best used on hard floors, but we can’t wait to try it out to see if it works so well on rugs and carpets.
The V15 Detect has been announced so far only for selected markets and is available in the US for $ 700 each (about £ 515 / AU $ 920). We will update this article when we know more about its availability and prices in other markets.
