Clearly the most important news of the day
Another year, another Android launch. As you can expect, this year’s launch will be called Android 12, as Google abandoned its dessert nomenclature scheme for Android 2 years ago. Even though Android 12 does not officially have a tasty dessert, that does not mean that Google has given up entirely on giving its operating system releases a name for dessert. While last year’s Android 11 (Android “R”) release was internally called “Red Velvet Cake”, this year’s Android 12 (Android “S”) release appears to be called “Snow Cone”.
Although Google hasn’t officially confirmed its internally decided dessert theme for Android 12, we learned this little rumor thanks to a little digging. When Google publishes the source code for Android 12 later this year, you may notice that many branches of development are preceded by “sc”. By the way, it’s short for Snow Cone, much like how Android 11’s development branches were preceded by “rvc” for “Red Velvet Cake”. (What is it, you say? “Sc” could easily be a shortcake? That’s what we thought, too, but checks notes it is not.)
Last year, Google published a fun AR statue that had a hidden recipe for how make a Red Velvet Cake with Android 11 theme. Maybe we can get some fun tie-ins and Easter eggs based on the name of the Android 12 dessert later this year?
