You still love the Harry Potter but absolutely can not bear to support its charming author? If then, Magic: The Gatheringthe last set of letters from, Strixhaven: School of Wizards, it may be for you.
More than a simple card game to demoralize your friends, Magic: The Gathering has its own history, with each new set of cards taking place in magical realms called plans. Recent planes included the Viking theme Kaldheim, inspired by fairy tales Eldraine, and now with Strixhaven, publisher Wizards of the Coasts is at Hogwarts – launching its popular card game.
Stop me if you’ve heard this before. Strixhaven is a school for wizards founded by five powerful dragons, each with its own disciplines and personalities. They divided their school into five different colleges, with each college dedicated to the ideals of its founders. Magic published a short, cute blog about each of the faculties. Strixhaven looks a lot like a real university with departments of math, science, history and literature, each with its own unique magical talent.
I love Magic: the Gathering, but I was always more attracted to the characters in the cards than to the worlds they occupied. I identified with black characters like Kaya and Teferi and deeply respected characters like Ashiok, despite the misery that has always caused me their card materialized in my opponent’s hands.

With Strixhaven, I am very excited to learn more about the world. It looks like a lot of fun – a stark contrast to Magicusual stories of war or surviving in monster-infested environments. Strixhaven it looks like it’s just kids learning and having fun, and that’s a nice change of pace –Magic I could use a little levity. It can not be Nicol Bolas tries to dominate the worlds all the time, right?
Here is my brief summary of the schools.
Witherbloom is the school for bio nerds who like to poke things alive or dead and definitely have a collection of taxidermized pets. Quandrix is the school that somehow managed to make magic boring by adding math to it. Prismari is the school for drama children – at all hours of the day, at least one person can be heard singing “Seasons of Love”. Lorehold is the college of history and is inhabited entirely by children who read at lunch, in the playground and in the bathroom. Finally, Silverquill is for literature nerds who think that wearing black is a substitute for having a personality.
Along with a standard set of cards, Wizards will launch pre-made Commander decks for each of the colleges. Personally, I’m choosing Lorehold, since I’m a history nerd who prefers to play white mana decks and … I was one of those kids who read at lunch, in the playground and in the bathroom.
Strixhaven: School of Wizards won’t come out for a few more months, but you can expect to see more cards and, hopefully, more of the story as we get closer to the release date.
