Each new version of iOS comes with a lot of bugs and problems, some bigger than others, and iOS 14 is no different. Apple will solve many of these problems with subsequent software updates, but it’s helpful to know if the problems you’re seeing on your own phone are known bugs in iOS 14 – and learn about some of the workarounds and fixes you can try.
Troubleshooting isn’t always an exact science, so keep in mind that some detective work may be needed to find out what’s wrong with your particular iPhone or iPad. It is possible that something other than iOS 14 is to blame for the problems you’re encountering, but we should be able to help you find that out one way or the other.
Low battery
iOS 14 caused battery drain issues for multiple users, with iPhones reportedly lasting a long time with the latest Apple mobile operating system installed. It was mentioned in relation to each iOS 14 release, but it looks like the release of iOS 14.2 in particular, it caused the battery life to decrease.
Battery life is not specifically mentioned in the iOS 14.3 release notes, and it appears that the problem continues, at least for some users, to generate widespread complaints on social media. Apple has not yet officially recognized this.

But the company did provide some technical support earlier in the iOS 14 release cycle for those with an iPhone and an Apple Watch, recommending a full backup and reset (instructions on here and on here) from both devices to resolve battery consumption issues. Unfortunately, in addition to the usual battery saving tricks, a full reboot is all you can try while waiting for a software update to (hopefully) fix the problem.
No notification
One of the most common (and frustrating) problems reported by iPhone owners running iOS 14 is that the Messages app does not show notifications As it should. Alerts do not appear on the lock screen and red stamps do not appear on the application icon in some cases, which adds to a separate problem that caused delays in SMS messages.
This is a bug that Apple recognized and claims to have fixed with the iOS 14.3 update, according to the press release notes. If you have noticed that this is happening on your own device, the first troubleshooting step to try is to upgrade to OS 14.3.
If you are still not receiving message alerts as you should, there is no other workaround to try than the basic fixes: Double check your notification settings, restart your device and, if nothing else works, restart it and starting over from scratch (first make sure you have a full backup).
Choice of new default applications
IOS 14 quietly introduced the ability to set applications other than Apple Mail and Apple Safari as your default email client and web browser, respectively – the only problem is that iOS quickly forgets what alternatives you selected and returns to o Apple defaults after a restart.
This is an issue that Apple has addressed and says it has been fixed, as the iOS 14.0.1 update which was released not long after iOS 14. If you haven’t upgraded to the latest version of iOS for any reason, this should be enough to maintain your default email and web options.
If you are still unsure how to configure this new feature, you need to go to Settings and choose the email application or web browser of your choice from the long list of applications. You should then see a Standard mail application or one Standard browser application option, which you can use to make the chosen application the default choice.
Losing Wi-Fi Connections
Wi-Fi and cellular connection issues always arise with a new version of iOS, and iOS 14 was no different – it must be something about applying a new layer of software that confuses your phone (or the networks it is connected to) connecting), often resulting in broken or unstable connections.
In the case of iOS 14, one of the most widely reported problems is the problems with broken wifi connections. According to several users, iPhones tend to lose their wireless internet connections and then refuse to reestablish the link, which causes problems for almost everything you could ever want to do on a smartphone.
This is a bug that Apple has identified and fixed – it should have implemented on your phone with iOS 14.0.1, which “fixes an issue that could prevent your iPhone from connecting to Wi-Fi networks,” according to the release notes. If you are still having problems after the upgrade, you will have to try the standard troubleshooting techniques to try solve an internet connection problem.
Application-specific issues
There are always one or two apps that don’t work properly with a new version of iOS: developers have to work hard to make their software work with Apple’s updated operating system, and sometimes bugs escape through the cracks. If this happens to you, stay tuned for application updates – or even ask developers directly about them.
YouTube is an example of this when it comes to iOS 14: the picture-in-picture mode didn’t work, it did, and then it didn’t work again. At the time of writing, it will only work properly if you are a YouTube Premium subscriber (an earlier alternative to running YouTube within Safari has been blocked).
It’s the same with 4K playback from the YouTube app: it will only work if you are a paying subscriber. Other applications on your phone may have similar restrictions, so if you are experiencing problems or something is not working well for a specific application, focus your troubleshooting efforts on that particular application.
Other problems
There are probably more problems than the ones we discussed above, but these are the ones that have been most widely reported. It is worth keeping an eye on official iOS 14 updates page, because the company will list the bug fixes being applied to iOS, as well as the new features being added.
Issues that have been resolved since the first release of iOS 14 include issues with sending emails, displaying widgets, using Family Sharing, receiving calls, wireless charging, camera display, headset audio levels , unresponsive lock screen, and more, if you’re having trouble with any of the above, upgrading to the latest version if iOS 14 is worth trying.
If you are experiencing a problem that we do not address here, some web searches should bring correspondence with anyone else who is having the same difficulties (try to be as specific as possible in your search). Good starting points are Apple Subreddit on Reddit and IPhone Discussion Forums on the Apple website. Or tell us your problem below – perhaps the intrepid readers of Gizmodo can help solve it.
