Episode 5 of WandaVision puts all doubts aside by confirming that Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch, could have beaten Thanos alone in Avengers: Endgame.
WandaVision confirms that Scarlet Witch could have beaten Thanos in Avengers: Endgame alone, if he didn’t call for backup. Long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe began, comic book readers debated who the strongest Avenger (and superhero) was, and this conversation was carried over to the big screen versions of these characters. Thor often claims that he is the strongest Avenger, but it was Hulk who was needed to snap in Endgame, bringing everyone back to life.
Thor and Hulk’s forces were put to the test in Thor: Ragnarok, but although one of them won, Captain Marvel was widely considered to be the strongest Avenger – that is, until Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios confirmed in 2019 that it was actually Scarlet Witch who could defeat them all. This was proven in Endgame, when Thanos’ time from 2014 traveled to the present day and fought the Avengers outside his compound. Thor, Iron Man and Captain America tried to defeat Thanos on their own, but none of them had a chance against him. When the rest of the Avengers returned, Wanda Maximoff arrested Thanos using his powers and could really have killed him, but she was interrupted by a bombing of Thanos’ ship.

Although it was strongly implied that Wanda could have beaten Thanos alone, WandaVision now confirms this as a fact. In discussing Wanda’s skills and how she’s fueling the magic bubble around Westview in WandaVision season 1, episode 5, Darcy Lewis says that Wanda needs to use an “insane amount of power”, to which Jimmy Woo adds: “far exceeding everything she has exhibited in the past.” Part of that statement is true, but Monica Rambeau refutes that Wanda was not always so powerful, saying: “She could have killed Thanos on her own if he hadn’t started a blitz”, referring to the ship “raining fire” on the Avengers in battle end of the Endgame.
Unlike comics, Wanda is not a mutant in the MCU and instead obtained his powers from the Mental Stone. Since these stones are the primordial energy and content that the universe has not seen since the Big Bang, it is understandable that the characters moved by the Infinity Stones – Scarlet Witch, Vision and Captain Marvel – are stronger than everyone else. But in the case of Wanda, she has both physical and psychic powers, which makes her a force to be reckoned with. She can crush people, separate them and control them mentally, all of which is on display in Wanda’s last three screen appearances – Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and WandaVision.
Wanda can handle just about anything – energy and reality being her two main focuses – and using a combination of her skills is why she was able to face Thanos alone. She caught Thanos in a kind of force field, and started crushing him and his seemingly impenetrable armor. And years before that – although only a few moments for her – she used her telekinetic powers to destroy the Mental Stone, from which she received her powers as well as Vision. Wanda may be exhibiting new powers in WandaVision, but the strength level of those skills has always been there.
