Apple’s iMac 2021 will not only have a bold new look, but will also have a lot more screen space, according to a promoter with a solid track record.
“The MiMac screen is really big, bigger than the biggest,” he wrote L0vetodream on Twitter (translated). Given that the largest iMac that Apple sells is built around a 27-inch screen, it looks like users will be able to enjoy more space.
Given that the current iMac has very thick bezels and a considerable ‘chin’, it is entirely possible that Apple could extend the size of the screen without greatly increasing the footprint of the device itself. This is something that Apple has done before, albeit with a different type of hardware: the iPhone 12 mini has a larger screen than the iPhone SE, despite having a smaller overall size.
Given that we heard that the iMac 2021 will have the design inspired by the Apple Pro Display XDR with its flat back and reduced edges, it is entirely possible that the iMac L0vetodream refers to come with the same dimensions of 32 inches.
If that sounds like a lot, it looks like Apple will keep the iMac smaller, although there are rumors that it will also increase in size. With the same frame and chin savings as the larger iMac, it has been suggested that the smaller model will grow from 21.5 inches to about 24 inches.
Along with the change in design and dimensions, it has also been reported that the new iMacs will come in a variety of colors, in case you want to make your workspace a little more fun.
Of course, it’s what’s inside an iMac that really counts, and the rumor is that Apple’s all-in-one desktop could be following last year’s MacBook Pro M1, MacBook Air M1 and Mac mini M1, switching to Intel by Apple Silicon.
The new Macs have proven to perform great with low power consumption. This would probably be improved on an iMac, with Apple reportedly experimenting with its own silicon “with up to 32 high-performance cores” – a huge improvement over the eight found on the current M1 chip.
Last month, a crash report seemed to confirm that Apple is at least testing its own chips on iMac hardware, although the company may also sell Intel configurations to purists who need maximum software compatibility.
Although Apple is planning an event for this month, it is unclear whether the iMac will make an appearance. Instead, the focus is apparently set to be on the iPad Pro 2021 and AirTags.
