A kitchen installer gaped after unexpectedly discovering a secret message and a gift that had been hidden under the floorboards 20 years earlier.

Craig Harrigan, from Perthshire, Scotland, was destroying a customer’s kitchen when he came across a small bottle of Glenkinchie whiskey and a note tucked under the floorboards.

The message said: ‘Jack and May lived here – three children and a dog. Kitchen tidied during April / May 2001. All the best, a drink on us. ‘

The miniature bottle was fixed to the wall using a nail and an armband, while a sweet message from previous tenants had been scrawled on the floor.

Sharing the unusual finding for TikTok, Craig explained: ‘So, we are removing a kitchen and we found a message under the floor.’

Commenting next to the clip, Craig admitted that his initial thought was that 2001 was not “long ago”, until his co-worker revealed that he wasn’t even born then.

Despite Jack and May’s generous gesture, Craig said no, if he had the courage to drink the whiskey after being under the ground for 20 years.

He captioned the post: ‘Doing an essential job! Great find. I’m not sure if I would drink too. ‘

His video has garnered over 11,000 views and countless comments from TikTokers, who were amazed by the gentle gesture of the tenants, saying that he had ‘restored’ their faith in the world.

One person wrote: ‘How beautiful it is. I can do that when mine runs out! ‘

While another commented, ‘This is really so cute. So it restores my faith in the world. Probably don’t drink if you are using power tools. ‘

And a third said: ‘a man of class. Only in Scotland eh ‘

Another person even urged Craig to drink the whiskey, writing: ‘Okay! The seal has not been broken ‘

But others did not seem so convinced by the discovery, as one person said he expected it to be “genuine and not a bottle of pee”.

Meanwhile, one person suggested that Craig should leave the initial bottle and add his own message, providing another surprise for the next person to find out.
