The judge limits the courtroom to one member of the George Floyd family at a time during the Chauvin trial

A judge ruled on Tuesday that only one member of George Floyd’s family at a time will be allowed in the trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin, accused of his death.

NBC News reported that Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill said that different members of Floyd’s family could alternate during the trial. The same rule applies to Chauvin’s family.

Other rules require participants to comply with the COVID-19 guidelines, including the practice of social detachment and the use of masks, according to NBC.

The lawyers for the Floyd family, Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci, said in a statement that many of the members of the Floyd family intended to witness the trial in court.

“Although they understand the judge’s reasons for limiting court attendance, the family is understandably disappointed by the decision,” they said. “The family is looking forward to the start of the trial as a critical milestone on the road to justice and a step towards closure in this dark chapter of their lives.”

Chauvin’s second-degree murder trial and manslaughter charges are scheduled to begin on Monday. In the video of Floyd’s death in May that went viral and rekindled the Black Lives Matter movement, the former officer can be seen kneeling on Floyd’s neck while repeatedly saying, “I can’t breathe”.

The three other officers involved in Floyd’s death – J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas K. Lane and Tou Thao – have been charged with assisting and inciting manslaughter and will be tried separately from Chauvin. They are due to be tried on August 23.

All four were fired from the Minneapolis Police Department shortly after Floyd’s death.
