Clemson’s quarterback Trevor Lawrence should be the No. 1 overall choice for the Jacksonville Jaguars. This makes Justin Fields from Ohio State and Zach Wilson from BYU available to Douglas. According to former NFL MVP and Super Bowl winner Joe Theismann, Wilson is the best QB candidate of the three. By CBS Sports:
“Honestly, yes. [It’s] very close. We’re sort of splitting the hair here a little bit, but I would [take Wilson over Lawrence] indeed. … I think Zach obviously loves the way he plays the ball. It is difficult to teach. We saw people learn to improve a little. He has all the skills; he has a living arm, he has a strong arm, he can touch him, he can shoot. He’s 6′3 ”, he’s not a small guy. He moves with great athletics. I think that, seeing him play as a defender, he looks really ready. Trevor Lawrence is certainly a grown boy who knows how to run well, surrounded by incredible talent at Clemson. It’s a little bit like Mac Jones in Alabama. They are surrounded by incredible talent and sometimes you look at that talent and say ‘it helped the position a lot.’ I think in the case of Trevor, being a young guy and as strong and physical as he is, he will have a great opportunity to learn, as will Mac and all the young people, Justin Fields, too, outside of Ohio. I just think that when entering this particular draft, Zach checks all the boxes for me. Personally, my choice. My man. It looks like Jets may be the ones to take you to 2, which potentially puts Sam Darnold on the market or elsewhere. “
Theismann, a native of New Brunswick, NJ, took the Washington Redskins to a pair of Super Bowls, winning the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XVII over the Miami Dolphins. Theismann was the NFL MVP in 1983.
The former Notre Dame defender joined the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003.
