The ‘Jeep’ Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer return after 30 years

The 2022 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer unveiled on Thursday mark the return of the models after 30 years, but you don’t have to call them Jeeps.

Full-size SUVs are being treated by the automaker as an “extension” of the Jeep brand and do not use its name. It is more or less like what Land Rover does with the Range Rover.

You also won’t find them at all Jeep dealers. Only establishments that have won the JD Power Customer First award and are willing to set up a dedicated Wagoneer section in their showrooms and meet other service requirements will be certified to sell the trucks.

All of this is part of the effort to differentiate them as a premium offering that will compete with a variety of vehicles, from the Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Tahoe to the Cadillac Escalade.

Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are the same size and share their body in the construction of the painting, the names designating two layers of finish. Its boxy style with large windows and railings tilted forward is inspired by the appearance of the originals.

The basic prices of the Wagoneer range from $ 59,995 to $ 74,995 and those of the Grand Wagoneer from $ 88,995 to $ 105,995. However, the lowest-priced model offered at launch will be the $ 69,995 Wagoneer Series II.

The Wagoneer is powered by a 5.7-liter V8 of 395 hp and the Grand Wagoneer has a 6.4-liter V8 of 471 hp, both engines combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the Grand Wagoneer concept unveiled last fall, a plug-in hybrid powertrain is currently not available.

The Wagoneer comes standard with rear-wheel drive, but three Quadra-Trac four-wheel drive systems with increasing capacity are optional. The Grand Wagoneer is only available with four-wheel drive and also receives a standard air suspension system that can increase the ride height by 2 inches to provide up to 10 inches of ground clearance for off-road or lower the vehicle for greater fuel economy and ease of entry. Both models are available with a package that gives them a 10,000 pound trailer rating, which surpasses the second best Ford Expedition by 700 pounds.

Both are larger and have more space for passengers and rear cargo than the standard-sized versions of the full-size SUVs from Ford and GM, but are smaller than the extended wheelbase versions such as the Ford Expedition Max and Chevrolet Suburban. The Wagoneer comes with seats for eight passengers, but an arrangement for seven passengers with chairs from the second row captain is available and is standard on the Grand Wagoneer.

The interior designs are similar, but the Grand Wagoneer offers high quality upholstery and finishes and can be purchased with a series of seven digital displays.

This includes the instrument panel, infotainment system, temperature control panels for front and rear passengers, two rear seat entertainment screens with integrated Amazon Fire and an unprecedented front passenger side display that can be used to control systems navigation and audio, as well as watching video with sound provided by a 1375-watt McIntosh audio system and 23 speakers on top models.

Unlike old trucks, you won’t be able to get wooden panels on the sides, but the Grand Wagoneer makes up for it a bit with large strips of real walnut trim on the dashboard, doors and center console.

A wide range of electronic driver aids is available across the range, including standard adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency brakes; a digital rear view mirror with video power; a 360 degree panoramic camera system; a frontal infrared night vision camera; and an active lane centralization system, which will be offered with a steering feature without intervention on an unspecified date.

Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer reservations are currently being accepted with a $ 500 deposit and deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2021.
