The iPhone 12 Mini faces production cut due to ‘much lower’ demand than expected

Apple is cutting orders for all iPhones by about 20% compared to December’s plans, with the iPhone 12 mini being the majority of the cut, according to Nikkei Asia. In line with previous reports, the publication claims that demand for the iPhone 12 mini was “much lower than Apple initially expected”.

The report states that Apple initially intended to protect components for up to 96 million iPhones in the first half of 2021, including the entire line of iPhone 12 and older models like the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE, but the company is now targeting production of about 75 million units during that period. This is still slightly higher than sales of the iPhone in the same period last year, the report adds.

The iPhone 12’s mini demand has been so lackluster that Apple has even asked some vendors to temporarily stop building components specifically for the 5.4-inch device, according to Nikkei Asia. Some of the components and parts of the iPhone 12 mini have been relocated to the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, a source told the publication.

Apple still believes it is seeing healthy demand for its three most sophisticated iPhone 12 models, with strong sales of the handsets helping to contribute to Apple’s record $ 111.4 billion revenue reported in the December quarter.

While demand for the iPhone 12 mini may be less than Apple initially expected, the company is yet to launch a so-called iPhone 13 mini this year.
