The Houston Department of Health reopens the COVID-19 vaccine waiting list for older adults, continues to focus new allocations on the most vulnerable

February 12, 2021

HOUSTON – The Houston Department of Health reopened its COVID-19 vaccine waiting list today for people aged 65 and over, people aged 60 and over with chronic health conditions and people with disabilities.

Those who qualify can call the Department’s Aging Area Agency at 832-393-4301 to leave a voice message with their name and phone number. Calls will be returned for screening and scheduling as supplies are available. People just need to leave a message.

The department stopped adding people to the waiting list on January 29, after receiving approximately 70,000 calls. There are currently about 10,000 people on the list.

Another 9,000 first doses of the vaccine arrived at the department on Friday and another 1,900 are expected early next week. Of the new batch, 6,729 are for the Department’s Area Agency on Aging, 3,974 for providers in underserved communities and 197 for appointments previously scheduled during the week of February 15, 2021.

The department’s vaccination posts are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays due to bad weather. People booked on these days will be contacted for rescheduling.

People can register for the HoustonRecovers AlertHouston subscription to learn about new naming opportunities by email, text message, voice call or mobile app push notification.

Second doses
The department will schedule 4,784 second doses next week, contacting them via text message and email with links to self-registration.

People with internet or technology problems and those who do not receive a message should contact the COVID-19 call center 24 to 48 hours before the recommended 28-day deadline for Moderna.

If contact information has changed since a person received the first dose from the health department, notify the call center at 832-393-4220.

People who received their first dose on January 16 at Minute Maid Park are receiving their second dose by appointment from February 12 to 13 at Delmar Stadium or Minute Maid Park.

People vaccinated by the health department during the week of January 18 to 23 will be scheduled for the second dose from February 17 to 20.

The department currently supplies the Modern vaccine, the second dose being recommended 28 days after the first. The updated CDC guidance says it should be administered as close to 28 days as possible, but can be scheduled for up to 42 days after the first dose.

The department provides second doses only to people who have administered the first dose.
