The Grey’s Anatomy star responds to a heartbreaking turnaround

Grey’s Anatomy spoilers to follow.

Grey’s Anatomy broke the hearts of viewers in its most recent episode, with the tragic death of Andrew DeLuca.

Before the debut of the 17th season in the UK next month, Gray emotionally said goodbye to DeLuca after his pursuit of a sex trafficker ended in tragedy, in the Thursday (March 11) episode in the United States.

DeLuca actor Giacomo Gianniotti spoke about the moving turnaround after the episode, thanking fans for their support and saying that the role was one of the “great honors” of his life.

He tweeted: “So much I could say … but everything that comes to mind is thank you. Thank you to all the fans who loved Deluca as much as I did. Telling your story was and will be one of the great honors of my life. Thank you.”

Writer Krista Vernoff revealed that no one planned to kill the character, and the story “told itself” from the beginning.

After the episode, Krista tweeted a statement about the story, revealing that the writers’ team was just as saddened by the loss as the fans.

She wrote: “Giacomo brought so much talent and so much heart to the role of Andrew DeLuca. We in Grey’s Anatomy are suffering the death of that character with all of you. Giacomo interpreted it beautifully and took him on such a powerful journey – from intern to romantic, to a mental health crisis and vice versa.

“Giacomo remains a member of our family not just forever, but for more this season. You will see him again. As an actor and director,” she added.

“This is a story that needed to be told. But sometimes we writers are just as sad about the stories as you are. This is one of those times. Thank you Giacomo for your performance, your talent, your grace.”

Grey’s Anatomy season 17 airs on ABC in the United States. It will air on Heaven’s Witness in the UK with selected episodes also available at NOW TV.
