The God of War Ragnarok sequel made great promise

While very little is known about the next God of War sequel, the brief teaser makes a promise that is perhaps too big for your pants.

Despite several rumors, it was still a shock when Sony and Santa Monica Studios confirmed that a God of War sequel, commonly referred to as God of War Ragnarok, was in development for 2021. Of course, the teaser just confirmed that and little else, but that in itself seems to hold great promise.

There is no doubt that this announcement makes the sequel one of the most anticipated games of 2021, but it remains to be seen whether it will actually arrive next year. In the teaser, there is little more than the logo, a 2021 release date provided and a statement that “Ragnarok is coming”. With that being where fans are displaying the captions (as well as the runes in the logo), it’s not much to go on, not for a game that will be released next year.

God of War Ragnarok release date

First, it is worth looking at the development of the original PS4 game. God of War was revealed at E3 2016 and released in April 2018, creating a gap of about 22 months between the reveal and launch. Obviously, if the God of War sequel on PS5 is coming in 2021, that is much less; however, development is a complicated process. There is a benefit as a result of this, but also a big red flag. First of all, this teaser just confirms the development of God of War Ragnarok, not when it really started. The odds are that Santa Monica has been working on this for some time, maybe even as soon as the development of the last game has ended, and it is possible that all 2020 editions just saw the teaser come later.

On the other hand, 2020 has been a difficult year for game developers, and many games have seen their fair share of delays as a result. Working on a big AAA game during the pandemic is no easy task, and it probably slowed the process down a lot. For God of War to land in 2021, it would probably be much further away than many expect. These expectations must be shaped by what is known, and that is very little. Again, the proper title and name have not yet been revealed, there has only been a story provocation and the gameplay is zero. Some games go from a revelation to a release in 6 months, that could be the case here, but considering all the factors, it just doesn’t seem enough God of War Ragnarok was shown to bet on a 2021 release date. This happens despite the teaser trailer making that “promise”.

God of War Ragnarok postponed in 2022?

There is also information that suggests a God of War Ragnarok the delay may have already happened, or at least it is on the table. In November, Sony released a PS5 trailer that indicated the launch window for many of its original titles, including everything from Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart for Horizon Forbidden West. Visibly absent is the God of War game, which was only announced 2 months earlier. Of course, it is possible that the trailer was assembled and ready before that, and there is no evidence that a delay is taking place. There is much against it, however.

For many, God of War it’s close and expensive, and a 2021 release date holds great promise – one that makes sense when you look at the big picture. However, going into detail raises many of the questions raised here. For now, fans can only wait for the next update from Sony and Santa Monica, which should arrive at least in 2021. Maybe God of War runs a quick marketing campaign (not that it takes a lot to sell the game, after all) that sees the game launch at the end of next year, but at the same time, maybe the sequel needs a little more time in the oven.

Expectations and expectations for the game are high, but it is important that everyone who invested in the game keeps their expectations under control. The very confirmation that the God of War Ragnarok sequel exists is enough for now, and its next release will help determine what is and is not actually promised.

O God of War sequel is in development with release date expected in 2021.
