Netflix is constantly looking for its next big franchise success – a new Weird stuff or The magician. And the trailer for Shadow and Bone causes the next fantasy series to be the next.
The first trailer for the series adaptation by Netflix shows the main protagonist of the series, Alina, a cartographer who discovers that she has a special power that can prevent the world from being swallowed by darkness, threatened by a terrible sea of types called the fold.
Shadow and Bone is the fantasy series by Leigh Bardugo that has taken readers by storm. The book, which introduces readers to the Grisha universe – a world inhabited by special people who practice a form of spell known as small sciences – has become immensely popular on sites like Tumblr and TikTok.
Fantasy, especially series that focus on teen characters and young adults, is a genre that all networks and streamer are trying to master. Be one Percy Jackson series on Disney Plus or Your Dark Materials on HBO, finding out what’s the next big obsession with fantasy in a postWar of Thrones world has become a race. It makes sense; shows how The magician and Weird stuff they are immensely popular and the fantasy worlds allow studios and chains to create complete franchises.
For example, the Grisha universe was originally composed of a trilogy – Shadow and Bone, Siege and storm, and Ruin and Ascension – but was followed by Crooked Kingdom series, which included the popular Six of Crows. If Shadow and Bone take off for Netflix, there are several other books for the streamer to mine for potential spinoffs of their own.
For now, fans can at least tune in Shadow and Bone to watch the adventures of Alina, Mal and the Darkling. Shadow and Bone will debut on April 23.
