The first photos of Shadow and Bone bring Grishaverse to life

The first photos of Shadow and Bone, Netflix’s adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s best-selling books, Grishaverse, reveals the main cast in action – as well as a glimpse into the fantasy world.

“Think of Imperial Russia, not Medieval England, repeating rifles instead of swords,” said Bardugo, who also serves as an executive producer.

The first set of books is centered on Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), an orphaned cartographer who was unaware of her great power. Ravka’s land is divided in half by the Shadowfold, a supernatural barrier of tangible darkness, which is slowly destroying the country’s economy and society. Alina, along with her best friend Mal (Archie Renaux), are members of a expendable army that the Ravkan government sends through the Fold.

After her powers are manifested, Alina joins the ranks of the Grisha army – a force of magic wielders led by the mysterious and incredibly powerful General Kerrigan (Ben Barnes, in what is truly the most perfect cast of fans that has come to life).

But the show is not just adapting the first trilogy: it also incorporates stories from the Crows’ duology, the assault books derived from a criminal gang. These books, technically, take place years after the main trilogy, so the gang of six has not yet been assembled. Still, there is the Crows leader Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter), his right hand Inej Gafta (Amita Suman), and sniper Jasper Fahey (Kit Young).

Completing the cast are spy Grisha Nina Zelik (Danielle Galligan) and witch hunter Fjerdan Matthias Helvar (Calahan Skogman). Matthias comes from a Scandinavian-inspired country that fears Ravka’s magic. The two eventually join the Crows years later, but it looks like the show will explore their contentious first date.
