The February update fixes touch issues with Pixel 5 and 4a 5G, sensor issues with Pixels 3 and above

Google released the February 2021 update for all Pixel phones running Android 11. In addition to security patches, this update includes some important fixes. Don’t get too excited, this is just Google fixing things that broke.

First, the touch sensitivity issues on the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G must be resolved with the new firmware. People began to realize that their phone screens sometimes lost touch after installing the December 2020 update.

The other fix covers all phones since Pixel 3 – there was an old problem with sensors that were not detected at startup. This problem first arose with Android 10 and would disable features like double tap and elevation detection.

In related news, the FCC approved an update for the Pixel 5 and LG Wing 5G that will enable band C in the USA. This holds the promise of better coverage and faster network speeds.

This will be a simple software update, as apparently the hardware already supports it (for some reason, Pixel 4a 5G will not have support for C band). FCC records refer to the Verizon and AT&T versions of the Wing (the T-Mobile model is not on the list).

Note: we do not know when band C will be enabled on these two phones, but there is no 5G in band C yet – it has only been auctioned recently and the results of this auction will be released in March. Verizon is believed to have bought the largest piece.
