The Evolution of the Unreal Engine (1996-2021)

Throughout its history, Unreal Engine has remained one of the most popular development tools in the gaming industry. From its early days in the mid-90s, to its powerful performance as a visual creation engine for games and movies, Unreal Engine has propelled many of the most iconic video games over nearly three decades – including Gears of War, BioShock and Fortnite.

In this video, we’re taking a look at the evolution of Epic Games’s technology. Starting with the 1996 Unreal Engine 1 technology demo, we see how Epic Games’ early technology revolutionized the rendering of 3D environments. Next, we’ll look at how Unreal Engine 2 took things further, adding enhanced lighting, detailed character animations and a greater sense of depth in 3D spaces. From there, the video continues, from Unreal Engine 3 to the present day, where we are still waiting for the next release of Unreal Engine 5, which adds more realistic visuals and lighting.

Along with this retrospective of Unreal Engine advances, we also published an extensive video on the evolution of PlayStation consoles. For more information on what’s to come with Unreal Engine 5, be sure to check back with GameSpot for more details.
