It is the band’s first performance in 22 years.
The New Radicals are meeting on Opening Day for a very special performance – one that has an emotional connection to Joe Biden’s son, Beau.
Although the first gentleman Doug Emhoff chose it as his favorite song during the 2020 presidential campaign, the single also has a very deep connection with the new president.
In Biden’s 2017 autobiography “Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship and Purpose”, about the loss of his son Beau by brain cancer, he wrote that “You Get What You Give” became a plea to your son during your battle.
“During breakfast, Beau always made me hear what I thought was his theme song, ‘You Get What You Give’ by New Radicals,” wrote Biden. “Even if Beau never stopped fighting and his will to live was stronger than most – I think he knew that day could come. The lyrics are: ‘This whole damn world can fall apart. You’ll be fine, follow your heart.'”
Vocalist Gregg Alexander told Rolling Stone that “if there is anything on Earth that would make us join the band, even if only for a day, it is the hope that our music could be even the smallest beacon of light in such a dark time. . “

“Playing music again after so long is a great honor, because we all have deep respect for Beau’s military service and high hopes for the unity and normalcy that Joe and Kamala will bring our country back to in this time of crisis,” added Alexander.
“America knows in its heart that things will be bright again with a new administration and a real vaccine plan on the way. That’s the message of music … this world will survive.”
The New Radicals was a huge success with the release of “You Get What You Give” in 1998 and found some success with the following single, “Someday We Know”. The group, however, ended before the second single was officially released. Alexander continued to make music for other artists – including “The Game of Love” by Santana and Michelle Branch – before he and keyboardist Danielle Brisebois won an Oscar nomination in 2015 for their song “Lost Stars” for “Begin Again”.
The band will perform as part of the virtual event Parade Across America, which will follow Biden’s tenure at the United States Capitol. Others who appeared at the event include Jon Stewart, Andra Day, Earth, Wind & Fire and viral skater DoggFace.
