Rumors from members of the film and TV industry indicate that Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls series may be coming to Netflix as a TV series.
With a history of almost 30 years, Bethesda The Elder Scrolls series has become one of the most loved RPG franchises in gaming history. The franchise spawned some of the most successful role-playing games of all time with Morrowind, Forgetfulness, and Skyrim defining three generations of the genre, and even a successful MMO spin-off in The Elder Scrolls Online, which continues to grow almost seven years since its launch. Now, it looks like Bethesda is considering bringing the world of The Elder Scrolls for Netflix.
This is according to a report by TV and film industry informant Daniel Ritchtman. Richtman says Netflix wants the series to be just as, if not more popular than Andrzej Sapkowski’s 2019 adaptation The magician, which was also inspired by the iconic video game series on CD Projekt Red. The series should directly adapt the version of Tamriel that fans are familiar with in the long-running video game franchise.
Although there is no confirmation of a Elder Scrolls Adaptation for TV from Bethesda or Netflix yet, the concept of such adaptation is not hard to believe, given that only at the beginning of this year Westworld co-creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan announced that they would be the executive producers of a Bethesda adaptation Fall franchise for Amazon Prime Video. That would mean that Bethesda’s two big RPG franchises would finally be coming to TV.
While the validity of this rumor has yet to be seen, Netflix is no stranger to adapting video game franchises loved exclusively for its streaming service. The most famous is the service Castlevania animated series, which has just released its third season earlier this year, with another on the way. Just this year, Netflix announced animated and live-action adaptations of games like assassins Creed, Beyond good and evil, Cuphead, Cyberpunk 2077, Splinter Cell, and resident Evil (two separate series, actually.) The company also announced a Sonic the Hedgehog animated series on one of its official Twitter accounts earlier this month, but immediately deleted it.
This increase in video game adaptations is probably due to the popularity of recent films and TV shows, such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Detective Pikachu, and The magician, each of which was a great financial success for the companies involved. However, as the recent Monster hunter movie already shown, there is still a stigma regarding the adaptation of video game properties, especially among fans of the franchises. However, due to the nature of the series’s releases and the lack of updates on The Elder Scrolls 6, a Elder Scrolls The TV series may be just what fans need to hold on to them while they wait for the next Bethesda release, if successfully produced.
