The Eagles are hiring Shane Steichen as their new offensive coordinator

Nick Sirianni’s first coaching staff in Philadelphia continues to form.

The Eagles reached an agreement on Monday morning to make former Chargers offensive coordinator Shane Steichen their new OC, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Steichen, 35, was one of only two known candidates for the job, along with Denver RBs coach Curtis Modkins.

Like defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, Steichen has close ties to Sirianni. The two worked together with the 2014-17 Chargers.

If there was any doubt about the “Eagles” allowing Sirianni to set up his own coaching staff, that question has been answered in the past few days. All the coaches that we heard being added to this team have worked with Sirianni before. This is significant because the Eagles really helped Doug Pederson build his first team five years ago. Pederson had worked in two positions, but under the same coach, so he didn’t have the resources to assemble a top team like Sirianni has now.

Sirianni and Steichen were both position coaches with the Chargers when Sirianni left to be Frank Reich’s CO in Indianapolis in 2018. After that, Steichen remained with the Chargers and finally rose to the level of full-time offensive coordinator in 2020.

But Anthony Lynn was fired and Brandon Staley got the job in LA, so Steichen was available.

While Steichen became the interim OC in 2019, he received that full-time title in 2020. Under Lynn, Steichen and QBs coach Pep Hamilton, first-round pick Justin Herbert had a debut season. The Chargers were the number 9 offensive in the NFL, averaging 382.1 yards per game, and the number 6 passing offense.

In 2016, Steichen actually replaced Sirianni as coach of the Chargers’ defenders when Mike McCoy’s team was reorganized. Sirianni has trained receivers in his last two years with the Chargers.

At the beginning of the off-season, Steichen attracted Seahawks’ interest in his offensive coordinator job and was even a candidate to stay in LA. But now he is coming to Philadelphia to form an offensive technical team with Sirianni and the new passing game coordinator, Kevin Patullo, who came from Indianapolis.

Here is a story of Steichen’s coaching career:

2010: Louisville, offensive assistant

2011-12: Porters, defense assistant

2013: Browns, offensive quality control

2014-15: porters, offensive quality control

2016-19: Chargers, Quarterbacks

2019: Chargers, interim offensive coordinator

2020: Porters, offensive coordinator

2021: Eagles, offensive coordinator
