The worlds of fashion and technology are not exactly synonymous, but if there is one gadget that has become a status symbol, it is Apple’s AirPods. Small in-ear versions. The AirPods Max, huge in size and price, hasn’t been around long enough to achieve ubiquity on the streets. But a newly discovered design surprise may soon help them stand out from the crowd.
Until now, AirPods Max were not known for their customization – choose one of the five colors and you’re done. But a recent disassembly revealed that the headband is unexpectedly simple to remove, leading to speculation about designs that could be changed in the future.

The disassembly by the Chinese YouTube channel PreLook revealed that the headband of the AirPods Max can be removed simply by inserting a SIM card ejector tool (the same one you’ll find on your iPhone’s case) into a small hole in the top of each cover the headset. In fact, looking at the process in action (below), there is an unmistakable feeling that the headband is designed to be easily changed.
For AirPods Max owners, this can be exciting news for two reasons. First, it suggests that if the headband or glasses are damaged, these modular elements could potentially be replaced without the need to purchase a new pair of AirPods Max (which, for $ 549 / £ 549, would not be the ideal).
But, perhaps more exciting, it may suggest that the AirPods Max may soon become much more customizable. Just like the plethora of official and unofficial Apple Watch straps available, could we soon see a ton of exchangeable AirPods Max tiaras or cups sold separately? With the right color combination, you might soon be able to make your AirPods Max look as eye-popping (or extravagant) as you wish.

It is not yet known whether Apple itself is planning to allow users to mix and match tiaras and cups. At the moment, you will need to shell out several pairs of AirPods Max if you want to change colors. Which, depending on how you look at it, is totally ridiculous or the ultimate status symbol. (We’re in the old camp, by the way.)
