The Haunted PS1 demo disc is neither a real disc nor a collection of real PS1 games, but it sure will make you feel like you’re sitting in front of an old CRT on a stormy 90s night. This is the second collection of demo discs presented by Haunted PS1, this time with an incredible 25 games included. The disc falls today tomorrow (as announced moments after I clicked publish) in the form of a launcher that you can download to access the entire horror quarter.
Again, there are some seriously scary looking games on offer. Chasing Static up there, whose demo is also on Steam, is an adventure set in rural Wales. You have a solid voice to match your lo-fi visuals as you use your anomaly detector to uncover the mystery of Hearth’s missing villagers.
The disc is practically a variety pack, with all kinds of different ghosts. Ghastly Goodies (on Itch), for example, looks a little cuter than scary with her little collectors of costumed sweets. Risu (on Steam) is a survival horror game in which you’ll solve puzzles while hiding from monsters. It definitely gives Resident Evil the first vibes. Hell, he even has a cell phone from that time. Take me back. Then there’s Lorn’s Lure (on Steam) with its disturbing first-person platforms.
This year’s trailer hasn’t been released yet, but here’s the one from last year to give you an idea of the kind of things you expect.
Despite the title, the creators of Haunted’s PS1 say you can expect the games in the demo collection to increase the definition a bit. “HPS1 is a community where we try to accept all retro and low-fi art directions,” they say. “As such, not every game needs to be 3D or have the visual quirks of any specific hardware. Likewise, we don’t require games to have a strict horror theme; even if it seems so old-fashioned that we can’t resist loving it. and want them in the collection. “Basically, rule number one is rad demos.
The demo disc has was pushed for tomorrow, 25th March. When it comes out, you’ll find it here on Itch. In the meantime, you can still try the 2020 demo disc, which was also great.
