Although it has not yet been widely implemented, Google is actively working to bring a completely dark mode to Google Search on the desktop. Thanks to another A / B test, we found that the dark mode of Google Search will also be able to follow the theme of the system on your desktop.
If you open an incognito window in Chrome (or in our case in Chrome OS), you may be greeted with a new message in your search. A box indicates that “the dark theme is now available” and encourages users to activate the setting quickly and easily with a shortcut button. Notably, the icon being used looks familiar. We are almost certain that it was used in a previous dark mode implementation.
In the search settings, Google offers users the ability to see the dark mode match the system’s theme on the desktop, something that is not very common for Google’s various dark modes. Although many Google products have a dark mode on the web, most of them need to be activated manually. Based on this A / B test, it looks like Google Search will only match the theme of your device as a whole. The Google “My Activity” page is another notable example of this functionality in a web application.
This functionality will be useful for Windows 10 and macOS users, who have system-wide themes compatible with Chrome, Safari, Edge and other browsers.
In this case, we didn’t notice any changes to the design of the overall look of the dark mode on Google Search this time. Google still opts for a dark gray background instead of real black, using white elements to contrast with the background, as well as a clear blur for the various icons and links. As previously reported, the dark mode still did not work on all pages and also did not persist in closing an incognito reopening.
