The comparison between RDR2 and Cyberpunk 2077 in water physics is embarrassing

In a video shared online, players can see the very clear difference between water physics in Cyberpunk 2077 and RDR2 (a game that is 2 years older).

A side-by-side comparison video showing the physics of water in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 was shared online, and the difference is, to put it simply, embarrassing for the CD Projekt Red. After the month that Cyberpunk 2077 had since its launch, the physics of water may well be the last thing on the minds of developers. Despite this, this does not make this comparison easier to observe.

As the games became more advanced and the environments more lush, fans came to expect their interactive experience to be continuous and engaging. Particularly in open world titles, modern game worlds are developed and vast, with dynamic environments that react to every movement of players. From the clinking of beads on doors in Hitman for crushing snow in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, players have gotten used to an immense amount of thought and time from the developer by investing in every noticeable detail in the virtual environments they explore.

These high expectations make games that miss the mark in their environmental physics all the more painfully obvious. And, to add salt to the wound, fans are making direct comparisons between Cyberpunk 2077 rarities and better-executed examples of other games and sharing them online. This is exactly what betta_rdr2 did. By uploading his video on Reddit, the user shows the contrast between the physics of water in Cyberpunk 2077 and the one from Red Dead Redemption 2. When firing a shotgun in the waters around Night City in Cyberpunk 2077, there is virtually no visual feedback to reflect that the player has disturbed the strangely calm waters. Advancing to Red Dead Redemption 2on the other hand, each cartridge fired into the watery abyss causes visible waves to flow from the impact site.

It is important to note that, although Cyberpunk 2077 only came out a month ago, after several delays, Red Dead Redemption 2 now it’s a few years old. This sharp contrast to something as simple as water physics really highlights how much the CD Projekt Red failed to achieve what it probably expected with Cyberpunk 2077. The fact that players even feel the need to contrast such a new game with one that has been out for a long time highlights players’ frustration with the product they bought last December, and high-level omissions like the physics of water- listed above is not limited to just one version of the disappointing Wizard side dish.

Comparison is said to be the thief of joy. For CD Projekt Red, comparisons made between its Cyberpunk 2077 and the technically (and possibly generally) superior Red Dead Redemption 2 it is certainly enough to steal any remaining joy that may remain after a truly terrible launch.
