The Coast Guard rescues 3 Cubans from the desert island where they lived on coconuts for 33 days

(CNN) – The US Coast Guard rescued three Cuban citizens from a desert island in the Bahaman, where they lived on coconuts for 33 days, the agency announced.

“It was incredible. I don’t know how they did it. I was surprised that they were in as good shape as they were,” said Lt. Justin Dougherty to CNN’s WPLG affiliate.

While conducting routine patrols on Monday, U.S. Coast Guard crews saw the two men and a woman waving makeshift flags on Anguilla Cay, located on an island chain between the Lower Florida Keys and Cuba. The Coast Guard delivered a radio, food and water to the trio on Monday and rescued them on the island on Tuesday.

The Cubans’ boat capsized in rough waters about five weeks ago, the trio told the Coast Guard, and they swam to the island.

The trio had no serious injuries, but were flown to the Lower Keys Medical Center for examination.

CNN contacted the Lower Keys Medical Center to inquire about his condition.
