Studies in children under 12 for the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines should begin within three to six weeks, according to the doctor who leads the study at Lurie Children’s.
Dr. William Muller said the studies are likely to take three to four months to fully engage participants and then will require at least a few months of follow-up to have enough data for FDA review.
Because of this, Dr. Muller expects that as soon as a vaccine is approved for children it will be in the fall or winter. However, he said it seems likely that the approval will continue to involve progressively younger groups of children, such as 6-12 years, then 2-6 years, then 6 months – 2 years.
