The celebrity greeting to Andrew Cuomo at the Emmy ceremony provokes mockery: ‘How embarrassing’

The montage of celebrities enthusiastic about New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, D., when he received the Emmy in November, sparked a new wave of conservative mockery on Monday.

Cuomo stood out in 2020 for his treatment of the coronavirus pandemic, despite his state leading the country in deaths, but now he is under fire from both parties because of the suspected cover-up of deaths caused by the virus in nursing homes.

Cuomo received the Founders’ Award “in recognition of his leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic and his masterful use of television to inform and calm people around the world” at the International Emmy Award ceremony on November 23, and liberal celebrities like Ben Stiller, Spike Lee and Robert de Niro praised him in a pre-recorded video.

The briefings “gave us hope, clarity, the truth and something we didn’t get from Washington: leadership,” said comedian Billy Crystal. “You are the epitome of the New York resistance.”

Stiller said, “I admire you” and mentioned that he sought out Cuomo’s younger brother, CNN host Chris Cuomo, for advice on the good-natured jokes to make about him.

“You’re the guy,” said actress Rosie Perez. “We were all in a crisis, in a panic, and every day you appeared in the air waves and offered your strength, your leadership, your direction, your care and your heart.”

“Thank you for your leadership during these difficult times,” said de Niro.

But with Cuomo’s handling of the state’s pandemic in a new light, with reports of what some Republicans are calling obstruction of justice, conservatives have despised Cuomo and his Hollywood fans.
