On the day of his inauguration, President Biden managed to place one last campaign ad.
In place of the usual maiden ball cover – you know, a beautiful Beyonc balladIt’s while the president and the first lady dance slowly – we had a sober and celebrity-filled concert called “Celebrating America” that aired on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and MSNBC during prime time.
Expecting Rachel Maddow to sing “You’re A Grand Old Flag” while spinning burning sticks, I was disappointed by the less exciting, but equally transparent, 90-minute program. The night was little more than a hypocritical public relations opportunity for the new government.
A press release said the program “would show the resilience, heroism and unified commitment of the American people to come together as a nation to heal and rebuild.”
Calm down people. This featured Jon Bon Jovi on a dock in Florida.
OK, occasionally he actually did what his title said he would do. The songs were introduced by frontline workers, teachers and volunteer children. No one would deny their heroism or worth. But these segments, of course, were narrated by Biden and looked like the kind of 30-second ad you would see on an Ohio TV set on November 6.
A few hours after the most important speech of his life, Biden gave another one. And this time, instead of being introduced by Amy Klobuchar, he was upgraded to Tom Hanks.
“[We] I wanted to make sure that our ownership was not about us, but about you, ”said the president while at the humble and selfless Lincoln Memorial.
“Because of you, democracy prevailed,” added Prez. So, if the other guy had gotten more votes, would democracy have messed up? Nevermind. Bring the songs.
In recent days, politicians and experts have told us that the darkest days of the pandemic are still going on. You wouldn’t know that from the lively music choices: Jon Bon Jovi covered “Here Comes The Sun”, Justin Timberlake and Ant Clemons did a duet on “Better Days”, John Legend sang Nina Simone’s classic “I’m Feeling” Good “and Foo Fighters shouted” Times Like These “(” I am a new day being born! ”
Demi Lovato later played “Lovely Day” while Biden and First Lady Jill Biden clumsily walked around the White House and Katy Perry sang “Firework” as the DC sky filled with light in the end, see? As of today, things are going very well!
Tomorrow, networks should stop giving your guy free airtime to gush empty feelings of happiness and demand real action. Hold the powerful responsible, right? Or was it just the past four years?
