With the COVID vaccine becoming available to more people each day, many people are eager to know how the vaccine will affect them – and how they can know if the vaccine is working. Fortunately, there is an easy way to know if the vaccine is working, according to experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). On February 12, Amanda Cohn, MD, CAPT, USPHS, a member of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, announced that there are three specific side effects that people should be aware after receiving the vaccine. Injection site pain
Cohn’s first side effect was pain at the injection site. “People must be prepared to feel pain”, he warned, referring to the place where you gave the injection.
During a recent interview with medical professionals and staff from Prince George County, Maryland, COVID consultant to the White House Anthony Fauci, MD, said he also experienced this side effect after both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. “If I pressed, I felt a little pain in my arm,” he explained. For Fauci, the side effect lasted just over 24 hours. And to get the latest COVID news directly to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter.

Fatigue
Cohn said fatigue is another indicator that the immune system is doing its job after you get vaccinated. Although Fauci did not experience this after his first injection, he got tired after the second dose. “Around night, I started to feel a little tired,” he said. And if you’re looking forward to being vaccinated, know that if you live in these states, you can now be vaccinated at Walgreens.
3
Low fever
The last side effect Cohn pointed out was a low-grade fever, which means anything below 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Although Fauci did not personally experience this side effect of his COVID vaccines, he acknowledged that some other recipients can. “It happened to some people,” he said. These are more common after the second dose.
According to Cohn, all of these side effects are expected to disappear in two days. As Fauci’s experience was, Cohn noted that even if you don’t have a reaction to the vaccine immediately after the first dose, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are out of danger. “People have mild reactions to vaccines, especially after the second dose,” she explained.
And while the post-vaccine side effects can be uncomfortable, Cohn assured them that they are nothing to worry about and are not signs that you have been infected with the virus itself. “It’s not COVID. It’s your body building an immune response to the protein that mimics the disease,” she said. And for more information about the signs that something is wrong, check the CDC. If you have these side effects from the vaccine, don’t get another injection.
