The case of the Virginia coronavirus is that of a player who played against Syracuse (report)

Syracuse, NY – The positive coronavirus test on the Virginia men’s basketball program came from a player who competed against Syracuse on Thursday, according to CBS Sports college basketball reporter Matt Norlander.

Norlander cited an anonymous source.

It is not clear at this point how the positive test affects Syracuse, how much that player was on the ground and how much contact he had with how many SU players. Virginia had players credited with up to 36 minutes and only four minutes played against Syracuse.

Pete Moore, director of sports information for Syracuse, told The Post-Standard | Syracuse.com that SU is still waiting for the results of their tests done after the Virginia game. It is unlikely that a positive case would arise so quickly.

The NCAA is requiring athletes who compete in their postseason tournaments to produce seven consecutive negative Covid-19 tests before competing. Teams will be able to compete as long as they have five healthy players, said NCAA senior vice president of basketball, Dan Gavitt, earlier this month.

The ACC had all team members use microchips at the tournament in Greensboro that would help doctors determine whether any players should be considered a close contact and quarantined if a positive test occurs.

After Duke’s team was forced to leave the ACC event due to a positive test after playing in Louisville, the University of Louisville said the technology made it confident that it would not be affected by contact tracking problems. In the case of Duke, the player who tested positive was a walk-on, who should have had no or limited contact on the court with Louisville players.

The Blue Devils decided to end their season, although it was clear that they would not be attending the NCAA tournament.

The Syracuse program was forced to take a long break earlier this year, after a game against Buffalo, when a Bulls player tested positive after the game. It is not known if Buffalo was using technology that would have helped to limit contact tracking concerns.
